There are 4 sections to the Bronze and Silver Award: Volunteering, Skill, Physical Recreation and Expedition with an extra residential section at Gold.
 
Students are required to organise their own: Volunteering, Skill and Physical Recreation sections and complete these in their own time. We offer guidance as to suitable choices but it is up to the student to make the necessary arrangements with clubs or outside agencies.

Volunteering

Participants are required to give service to others for a minimum period of 3 months. This could involve helping people in the community; for example in childcare or sports leadership, peer mentoring or helping children and young people with special needs.

Skill

Participants learn a new skill, or show progress in one in which they are already involved, over a period of at least 3 months. Examples are Astronomy, DJ-ing, Car or Bicycle Maintenance, Cookery, growing plants, Chess, Journalism, Music playing and Photography.

Physical Recreation

The participant must undertake some form of physical activity for a period of at least 3 months. It could be a sport or activity which is new to them or something in which they are already involved.  Examples are Athletics, Badminton, Canoeing, Cricket, Dance, Gymnastics, Judo, Sailing and Weight Training.
 
One of the above sections must be extended for a further 3 months, i.e. 6 months in total.

Expedition

The participants must plan and carry out a 2-day expedition at Bronze, 3 days at Silver.

It is possible to undertake the Volunteering, Skills and Physical Recreation sections of The Award all at the same time and thus complete these sections within 6 months of registration.

Duke of Edinburgh Achievement Certificate

Due to Covid-19 and the impact on expeditions, the Award have introduced the DofE Certificate of Achievement, available to any young person who enrols before 31 July 2021 and completes their Skills, Volunteering and Physical sections at Bronze, Silver or Gold. This helps to recognise the enormous amount of work and effort put in by our young people and will help keep them motivated to complete their Awards.
