Year 9 Basketball Tournament

Posted on: 13/03/2025

On Thursday 6th March Mr Humphreys and the year 9 basketball team travelled to Ashcombe School, Dorking for the end of season U14 Surrey basketball competition. The format was simple, 8minute games, 5 teams in a round robin format. The team with the most wins went home as champions. In tournament basketball it is crucial to score first and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Therefore, our pre-game discussion was about limiting turnovers, pushing the tempo of the game, and playing Blenheim basketball, fast, crashing boards, hustling on defence, and looking for high percentage shots offensively.

Blenheim 12 - 2 Three Rivers
Our first game was a nice opener and settled the boys' nerves. Three Rivers were a big team but lacked speed and the ability to score in the paint. This played to our strategy of rebounding and running the ball quickly, we were able to score quick transition points and moved ahead in the game 8-0. This meant we could use our bench and get everyone some experience on the court  before the next games. A comfortable win.

Blenheim 15 - 13 St Andrew's
St Andrew's were arguably the favourites, although confident after our game 1 win, Blenheim appeared unfazed and relaxed. The game was played at a high tempo, some early defensive mistakes meant Blenheim went behind 5-0 but some great transition and long-range shooting quickly put Blenheim up 8-7. Points were then exchanged and with 90 seconds to play Blenheim were behind 13-10. A three point play by C.Trussler and some great rebounding gave Blenheim a crucial possession, superb ball movement allowed J.Coutsoudis to score a big two point in the paint, St Andrews could not respond, and Blenheim won game two by a single basket.

Blenheim 7 - 4 Therfield
After back to back games, the team appeared fatigued, we made some rotations in order to rest players before our last game. We struggled to score and move the ball as freely in game 3, but our defence remained determined and made it hard for Therfield to score. A comfortable win.

Blenheim 2 - 12 Ashcombe
Both teams were riding a wave of three straight wins, it was a case of winner takes all in what was deemed the 'final' before we even started. Ashcombe, the hosts, raced into an early need,Blenheim found it difficult to guard their players in 1 v 1 situations, Blenheim looked tired;perhaps four straight games was taking its toll. Furthermore, we struggled to keep the ball, and persistent turnovers meant it was difficult to score. Sadly, we couldn't get into the game and ran out runners up behind Ashcombe.
