Year 9 Kew Gardens Trip
Posted on: 12/02/2025This week, 125 Year 9 students enjoyed an inspiring visit to Kew Gardens, where they explored the fascinating world of plants as part of their GCSE studies.
In the iconic Palm House, students investigated how plants adapt to tropical rainforest conditions, examining features such as large, waxy leaves, buttress roots, and drip tips that help them survive in their environment. They were able to see these adaptations up close, bringing their classroom learning to life. Students also appreciated the natural beauty of Kew Gardens by venturing onto the treetop walkway, where they took in spectacular views and gained a unique perspective of the forest canopy.
The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect with nature, develop their creativity,and gain valuable experience outside the classroom in a truly inspiring setting!Year 12 students took part in an insightful study day at Kew Gardens, enhancing their understanding of the water and carbon cycles and their links to tropical rainforest environments.
A session in the iconic Palm House, led by a Kew Gardens expert, provided a fascinating opportunity to explore these vital processes in action.As part of their fieldwork, students carried out practical techniques such as measuring carbon in trees, gaining valuable hands-on experience in assessing the role of forests as crucial carbon sinks. This enabled them to appreciate the importance of rainforests in regulating global carbon levels and mitigating climate change.All activities were closely aligned with the AQA A-Level specification, providing students with a strong foundation for their studies and inspiring ideas for their own individual investigations.
The trip was an excellent opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world environments,encouraging further geographical enquiry and research.
