Year 10 Boys' Basketball - NSSSA Champions!
Posted on: 08/03/2024Congratulations to the Year 10 boys’ Basketball team who have achieved first place in the NSSSA
tournament on this week. This is an excellent achievement and thoroughly deserved after a very
competitive season. Eight teams were due to attend, however only three schools turned up on
the day so Esher split into two teams to make for more matches all round.
Whilst travelling in the mini bus to the tournament the team were focussed and determined to
perform to their best ability with tactical conversations flowing throughout the mini bus as part of
their mental preparation. Once at the venue Ellis G showed excellent leadership by leading the
physical warm up and skills practice ensuring everyone was prepared.
Blenheim 12 - 7 Esher (1)
An excellent start right from the tip off. Esher won the tip but it was Atticus that reacted first to
intercept the pass and use speed and agility to beat defenders to the basket. Unfortunately the
shot didn't go it, but the foresight was fantastic and set a high level of momentum for the game.
Excellent passing from Ellis G and Eddie to find Baron who scored first to get 2 points on the
board for Blenheim. Ellis S used his speed and strength to defend well and thwart the counter
attack. Ellis G and Baron performed tactical defending and double marked their strongest player
to slow down the play and Ellis won the ball and passed to Eddie who dibbled over half the court
in and around defenders to score a lay up. Baron, Atticus and Ellis S performed great rebounding
and kept the pressure on to secure the win for Blenheim.
Blenheim 11 - 6 Epsom and Ewell
Blenheim won the tip and maintained possession for the first half of the game. Baron and Jeffery
communicated and linked up well finding space across the court to open the play up and scored
to put Blenheim in front. Nik used his strength in defence to rebound under the basket and
protect the ball, selecting the right type of pass to get the ball to Eddie who again, used perfect
control and agility to dribble around and through the defenders to score. Atticus scored an
excellent 3 pointer to keep Blenheim in front.
Blenheim 7 - 4 Esher (2)
Blenheim knew they had to win this match to secure first place. Ellis G controlled the pace of the
game, knowing when to 'give and go' and when to slow down the game down before an injection
of pace from Atticus and Eddie. Blenheim defended well and were 'basket-side' for the majority of
the key which made it hard for Esher (2) to break through into the key. Excellent chest, shoulder
and bounce passing from Jeffery, Baron, Eddie and Ellis S kept the ball alive and shots put up.
Unfortunately Blenheim did not always score but many shots did hit the rim on many occasions.
Eddie performed excellent lay ups and rebounds under the basket to help secure the win for
Blenheim.
The team showed excellent sportsmanship and respect throughout the tournament. Well done.
