NSSSA Year 8 Basketball Tournament

Posted on: 27/02/2024

Congratulations to the year 8 basketball team who achieved 2nd place in the North Surrey Schools’

Sports Association Basketball Tournament. There were 8 teams at the tournament and Blenheim

team won three matches and came first in their pool before going onto play St. Andrews in the final.

Blenheim 6 v 4 Ashcombe

Blenheim played exceptionally well in their first match against Ashcombe. Liam challenged for the tip

and kept up the pressure to ensure Blenheim regained possession. Excellent passing between Charlie

T and Finn kept the ball alive and Blenheim on the offence. Some excellent agility from John, outwitted

the Ashcombe defence to put the first points on the board. Charlie S was solid in defence and marked

his opponent excellently to thwart the Ashcombe counter offence. Charlie T controlled the pace of the

game and used his vision and power to score several lay ups. Herkus came on as a super sub and

used his speed to sprint up the court and immediately made a positive impact scoring the winning

basket.

Blenheim 14 v 2 Three Rivers

Blenheim started off by dominating the court with good use of space making it hard for the opposition

to defend. John was first to score a lay-up under the basket giving the team confidence to score more.

Finn has great anticipation of the game and can quickly turn defence to offence to help create space

and options. Charlie T used good ball control and dribbled around defenders, selecting the long pass

to Finn with great accuracy for Finn to score another 2 points. Liam also put points on the board for

Blenheim by successfully shooting just outside the key. Charlie T used excellent athleticism by

performing a 270 degree twist in the air to score an excellent basket. Herkus used great dribbling and

agility to get around the defenders and successfully score.

Blenheim 4 v 2 Epsom and Ewell

A low scoring game by comparison, however the effort level and determination shown by Blenheim to

work as a team shone through. Blenheim had many chances to score but unfortunately could not

always capitalise. However, Liam and Rhys defended well using excellent strength and reactions to

block and rebound. Charlie T reliably scored two baskets to keep Blenheim in front. Some great

dribbling through the legs by Jack made it hard for the opposition to defend against.

Blenheim 9 v 14 St Andrew’s

St Andrew’s won the tip off and immediately used pace in the mid court to drive the ball forward.

Blenheim worked hard as a team to get back on defence and mark their player to thwart the attack.

However, St Andrew’s eventually found space and scored. Charlie T used his power and strength in the

mid court to get through a number of defenders, however was double marked and sometimes triple

marked, meaning that St Andrew’s were able to stay strong in defence. Charlie T was fouled and

scored the free throws to keep the score level. Liam showed excellent defence and rebounding under

the basket to put the shots back up to score. Herkus and Finn continued to put the pressure on and

win balls back for Blenheim. John also scored a three pointer to keep Blenheim in the game with 2

minutes left on the clock. However St. Andrews scored their final basket in the last few seconds of the

game. It truly was an intense end to end game. Blenheim kept their heads up until the end of the

match and were gracious in defeat, showing excellent sportsmanship by shaking hands and

congratulating St Andrew’s and thanking the referee.
