Year 8

There was an excellent turn out of excited year 8 students ready to battle it out for House Points and the title of Year 8 Bench ball champions.

The matches began with Sinndar v Octavius on court one and Tulyar v Nashwan on court two. Tulyar quickly took the lead with a great pass from Lola and despite a good comeback from Nashwan, they went on to win the game 8-6. The court one game was close with Sinndar marginally beating Octavius with a goal as the whistle blew to leave the final score as 5-4.

Round two saw Octavius v Nashwan on court one and Sinndar v Tulyar on court two. Tulyar again dominated their match winning with a score of 6-2. Octavius once again narrowly missed out on a win with the score at 4-5 when the whistle blew.

The excitement was building for the final round with Nashwan v Sinndar on court one and Octavius v Tulyar on court two. As the final whistle blew, Tulyar lead 4-1 and Nashwan had their second win of the tournament with a score of 6-5.

All of the participants and staff watching had great fun and enjoyed the tournament.

Year 9

Following a brief recap of the rules, scores of Year 9 students flocked to the Sports Hall to partake in the annual House Bench ball competition, that is always played in a competitive yet good-spirited nature.

Due to the absence of a Sinndar team due to various injuries and illnesses, this particular tournament was a three-horse race, and one that ultimately required a grand final to determine the overall winner.

Up first on the court was Nashwan who had begun the game in a strong fashion before succumbing to the strength in depth of the Octavius team who were able to rotate their substitutes to avoid the fatigue of their opponents. Some fantastic blocking and defending from Octavius’ Rian eventually secured a 7-5 victory for the team in green.

In the next match, Nashwan fought back from their earlier defeat to secure their first points of the tournament. Despite some valiant and impressive off the ball movement lead by Aidan, Tulyar were unable to defeat Nashwan who ran out narrow 7-6 victors.

In the grand final showpiece, an intense showdown between Octavius and Tulyar resulted in the marginal 9-8 victory for Octavius who fought from behind to snatch victory right at the last.

An enjoyable tournament all round.

Years 10 and 11

There was an excellent turn out today of excited year 10 and 11 students ready to battle it out for House Points and the title of Bench ball champions.

The matches began with Sinndar v Tulyar on court 1 and Octavius v Nashwan on court two.

Sinndar and Tulyar kicked off on court one with a strong play from Shanay. Despite Toby’s best efforts and narrowly missing out on a shot, Sinndar were finally defeated 6-11. Whilst on court two, Octavius promptly took the lead with a strong, heavily female team leading the way. With a sterling effort of a defence from Sam, Nashwan were victorious 9-1.

Round two saw Octavius vs Sinndar on court one and Nashwan v Tulyar on court two. Here Sinndar made a glorious comeback with great plays by Lyra, backed up by Constantine’s height. The end result being 9-1 to Sinndar.

Concurrently on court one, Nashwan took a beating at the hands of Tulyar with a strong attack from Olie. Nashwan fought back with Raza’s relentless attacks but ultimately it ended 11-7 to Tulyar

The final round saw Nashwan v Sinndar and Octavius v Tulyar.

This was perhaps the most heated round with competitive tension at a high between Nashwan and Sinndar. Luke did a fantastic job on the bench but was frequently thwarted by the tag team of Armani and Jose. Eventually Charlie landed a shot for Nashwan but that was not enough to save them sadly. They succumbed to Sinndar 7-2.

Tulyar started their final game strongly and ended it equally as forcefully with Alex championing the way to a 12-6 win. Notable defence efforts came from Octavius in the form of Alana.

All of the participants and staff watching had great fun and enjoyed the tournament.
