Prior to this game, Blenheim’s Under 16 girls were 51 games unbeaten. The last school to beat them were Stanley Park, now renamed Oaks Park, who the team faced in the last 16 of the National Cup. This added an extra dimension to an already nerve inducing last 16 tie.
In difficult conditions and with the wind against, it was Blenheim who started strongest making their superiority pay by going 1-0 up with a beautifully worked goal finished by Becca T. This goal sparked Oaks Park into action and after an even ten minute spell a speculative cross from Oaks Park held up in the wind, Blenheim goalkeeper, Lara S, closed the striker down after initially coming for the cross but bought the striker down for a penalty. However, like in the national final last year, Lara stood tall and saved the resulting penalty. The pattern of the half did not change, with chances at both ends, However, five minutes before half time Oaks Park deservedly drew level with a good finish.
The half time team talk was positive; the Blenheim girls had done well with the wind against them and they felt confident going into the second half. Blenheim quickly found their rhythm in the second half and after an early goal form Becca T there was only going to be one winner. Blenheim played the ball around the pitch with confidence and were able to cut open Oaks Park’s defence regularly. With another three goals in the final fifteen minutes from Bronte W, Freya S and Becca T, Blenheim finished the game professionally. Congratulations to Cassie who was awarded Player of the Match and to Becca for her hat trick! The team now goes to Bournemouth in the quarter finals.
